However, International Men’s Day is also a time to reflect on men’s specific challenges. Despite progress, issues such as mental health and physical well-being remain pressing concerns. Statistics show that in 2023, 4,188 men in England lost their lives to suicide. Prostate cancer continues to affect one in eight men, and cases of testicular cancer are rising. These figures are stark reminders of the barriers that still exist for men when it comes to seeking help and openly discussing their health.
Today, on 19 November, we proudly celebrate International Men’s Day—a day to recognise and support the lives and wellbeing of men. This year’s theme, Positive Male Role Models, highlights the vital contributions of men in shaping and inspiring the people around them. At West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS), we are fortunate to have many male colleagues who make an incredible difference—whether it’s through their dedication on the frontline, their support in operational roles, or the positive impact they have in the communities we serve. We know that strength comes from embracing diverse perspectives, especially in a profession where teamwork, empathy, and resilience, are essential. These qualities are strengthened when we embrace diverse perspectives and create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. At WMFS, our inclusive policies, training initiatives, and community outreach reflect our commitment to fostering this kind of workplace culture.
This year, we are urging everyone to #ShareTheBurden.
Together, we can make a difference.
Taking the first step to ask for help or even just to check in with someone who might be struggling can make all the difference.
We also recognise that the work many of our staff do can be both physically and mentally demanding. That’s why WMFS is committed to providing comprehensive support for all our staff. Resources such as our Occupational Health team, The Fire Fighters Charity, peer support networks and employee assistance programmes ensure there’s always somewhere to turn.
We also offer specialist seminars, mental health training, and guidance from our stakeholder groups to help break down barriers and promote wellbeing.
We encourage everyone to join us in supporting the men in their lives, whether it’s through a simple conversation, sharing information, or raising awareness about the challenges men face.
