People across the West Midlands are being urged to take a simple but important step to keeping their homes and loved ones safe.
This ‘Register My Appliance Week’, West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is highlighting why registering the details of items from TVs to washing machines could prevent fires and save lives.
Nearly 35% of our fire incidents are related to home appliances being identified as the source of ignition. By registering your appliance, you can stay informed about important safety updates and prevent this from happening.
Registering also ensures manufacturers can easily reach you with critical safety updates or recall information. While recalls are rare, issues can develop over time, and unregistered appliances can pose significant risks if they remain in use in homes and workplaces despite known faults.
Sharing your details can sometimes also entitle you to an extended warranty or guarantee period. You can be alerted if you need to stop using or return your item. And free home visits by qualified engineers can be arranged if needed.

"
Registering your appliance is one of the simplest steps you can take to stay informed about important safety updates.
"
Emily Fernandez, Head of WMFS’s Prevention Team, continued: “Manufacturers sometimes need to alert you to safety concerns, and registering makes it easier for them to contact you when it matters most.
“You can even register second-hand appliances, so take stock of the items in your home and make sure they’re accounted for. It’s quick, simple and could save lives.
How to register your appliance
Registering online is quick and straightforward. To get started, you’ll typically need:
the model number or name of the appliance
the serial number (often located on the back or side of the appliance, or on its original packaging)
The approximate date you bought it and, in some cases, the price
Your name and contact details
Proof of purchase (required by some manufacturers, but not all).
