Firefighter Pension Increase 2024/25
It has been confirmed by the Government that Firefighter Pensions will increase by 6.7% from 8 April 2024. This is based on the increase in the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure of inflation for the year to September 2023, as expected.
As a result, April payments made on 1 April will include the increase pro-rata from the 8 April, with May payment including the increase for the full month.
Eligibility
As a pensioner in the scheme, you will normally get the increase if:
- You are aged 55 or over at the date of the increase or
- You retired on ill health grounds or
- You receive a spouse, partner or children’s pension
A lower, pro-rata increase will be applied to the pensions of anyone who started receiving their pension after 23 April 2023.
State Pension Age
If you have reached State Pension Age before 6 April 2016 and were a contributing member of the scheme before 6 April 1997 you will have been contracted-out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS) and have earned a Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP). This is paid as part of and within your firefighter pension. The pension increase will be applied to your non-GMP pension element only with the increase to your GMP element being paid within your state pension.
The WMFS pension team are working hard to ensure that you will receive the increase as planned from April 2024, and pensioners will receive a payslip confirming the increase shortly after the first payment.
We will also be writing to all scheme members via email or post to confirm this increase.
